JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebPAbout the Image Metadata Reader
The Image Metadata Reader runs entirely in your browser. Drop or select an image and the tool extracts file information (name, size, type, dimensions, last modified) plus EXIF data when present (camera make and model, date taken, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, focal length, GPS coordinates). Nothing is uploaded to a server — everything is read locally with JavaScript on your device.
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard that stores metadata inside image files, typically from digital cameras and smartphones. It can include the camera make and model, the date and time the photo was taken, exposure settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, focal length), and sometimes GPS coordinates indicating where the photo was taken.
How to use the reader
- Click the drop zone or drop an image file onto it.
- The image preview appears immediately.
- The metadata section below shows file properties and EXIF data (when present).
- Click Clear to remove the current image and start over.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my image show no EXIF data? Not all images contain EXIF data. Many social media platforms and image editors strip EXIF when saving or compressing. PNG files often have no EXIF, while JPG files from cameras and phones typically do.
Does this tool upload my images? No. All metadata extraction happens locally in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
Are GPS coordinates shown if present? Yes. If the original photo embedded GPS data, the reader shows the latitude and longitude. Many modern phones record GPS by default.
What image formats are supported? JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WebP are supported for file info. EXIF support depends on the format and the original device.
